A family in Tana River is mourning following the death of their loved one, a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidate.
According to reports, the KCSE candidate, an elderly Chief died while sitting for his KCSE exam on Tuesday, March 30.
It was reported that Abdullahi Shurie collapsed and died shortly after sitting for the chemistry paper.
After collapsing in school, Hola Secondary School, he was rushed to the hospital for a medical check-up.
Shurie later checked in a hotel after being attended to at Hola referral hospital.
He died while in the hotel.
“The man collapsed during the exam, towards the end of the paper hence the centre manager called for emergency rescue,” said an examiner.
Confirming the incident, Tana River DCIO Habel Ndikira said hotel attendants tipped off the police after the chief failed to attend exams as usual.
“The hotel attendants were worried since the old man did not get from his hotel room and they knew that he was sitting for his exams. They became concerned and called for help from the police station,” said the DCIO.
The DCIO also revealed that the chief had earlier visited the hospital complaining of chest pains after which he was treated and given drugs.
Family members said the chief had been suffering from high blood pressure and had chronic asthma.
His body was taken to Hola hospital mortuary.
