Celebrated singer Kevin Bahati was unable to contain himself while recounting the demise of his lovely mother in Mathare, Nairobi county.
While being interviewed by his wife Diana Marua through her YouTube channel, Bahati broke down saying despite the death occurring years ago, he had not healed enough to comfortably talk about the incident.
The Machozi hitmaker narrated that his mother died while awaiting treatment at her home. He explained that on the fateful day, they had woken up at 3am to go to the hospital because of the long queues that were witnessed at the facility.
“My mom passed on while in the house. It is a story that I usually don’t like talking about because up to today, Mathare does not have a Level Five hospital. The morning my mum passed, we woke up at 3am,” said Bahati amid tears.
Diana helped her wipe his tears as he covered his eyes with his palms. At that time, the singer said he was in nursery heading to Class One.
He disclosed that his mum breathed her last while she awaited treatment, with a relative queuing on her behalf at a Mathare hospital.
The father of three said the incident had impacted his interest in politics. He is competing for the Mathare parliamentary seat in the forthcoming August 9 General Election.
If elected, the 28-year-old pledged to improve the constituency’s health as there are people who still lose their loved ones because of ineffective medical services.
“We lived as 2 families in one room. I cried a lot during the burial as I did not want to be left in Ukambani. When they were coming back after the burial I hid in the car that had carried the body. When I came back I started living with a neighbour and ended up in a children’s home,” he added.
Bahati’s revelation elected sad reactions on social media.
Precious Orang’i said: “The pain of seeing a loved one die and there is nothing you can do is unbearable ….more so a mother…may the heavens grant those who have lost their loved ones the strength to overcome the pain.”
Eddah Thomas said: “That’s sad and painful especially when you have all it takes to care for her now, may her soul rest in peace.”
Ekaterina Dama said: “The Lord comfort you Bahati. The pain of losing a mother. Immediately things take a different angle.”
Truphena Mohol said: “Such memories are really painful. Let the young man grieve for as long as he wants. He has been through a lot.”
