Show of Might as Mike Sonko Campaigns Using Convertible Branded Car

Flamboyant politician Mike Sonko’s campaigns for the Mombasa gubernatorial seat in the forthcoming August 9 General Election are in top gear.

Sonko, who initially served as Nairobi governor before being unceremoniously ousted, is seeking the seat on the Kalonzo Musyoka led Wiper party ticket which is under the larger Azimio One Kenya Coalition.

Known for his deep pockets, Sonko’s campaign to succeed the incumbent governor Hassan Joho is characterised by a show of might and fancy cars.

Among the high-end vehicles in his campaign motorcade is a convertible saloon car, which he branded with his name and Wiper party colours.

In a video seen by, the flashy politician flaunted the car’s retractable roof feature. He unfolded it from the car’s compartment which spreads to show the word “Governor OO1”.

Other writings on the vehicle include ‘Mombasa ni Sonko’ and ‘Sonko 001’.

Also, as a campaign strategy, he has transferred his Sonko Rescue Team to Mombasa. Sonko reasons, this will help, among other things rescue needy families whose bodies of their deceased loved ones are lying in various mortuaries due to huge funeral expenses.

His arch-rivals for the Mombasa top seat include incumbent Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir who has been fronted by ODM and United Democratic Alliance’s candidate Hassan Omar.

A poll released by the Trends and Insights for Africa (TIFA) on Tuesday, May 3, indicated that Abdulswamad was still the preferred candidate enjoying popularity of 40%.

Surprisingly, despite announcing his bid a few days ago, Sonko was ranked second with a following of 28%.

Omar came a distant third, garnering only 9% of the total votes in the survey released by TIFA’s CEO Maggie Ireri.
