Several feared dead as car plunges into Indian Ocean at Likoni channel

Several people are feared dead after a car plunged into the Indian Ocean at the Likoni channel in Mombasa on the evening of Sunday, September 29.

According to a police report, the white car which was among the last ones to get into Mv Harambee from the channel, slid back from the vessel mid-stream.

Benjamin Rotich, Likoni sub-county police commander said a woman was the driver of the ill-fated vehicle.

“They might be dead because the incidence happened an hour ago and its deep sea,” he said.

Eyewitnesses recounted an attempt to help the woman by throwing a lifesaver at them to no avail as the occupants were trapped inside the vehicle.

I saw the woman and a boy inside the car. She had started screaming and calling for help when the car started to reverse. I threw a life saver at them,” said Mlei Majaliwa who was in the same ferry as quoted by Nation

A message by Kenya Ferry Services lend a glimpse of grim prospects of the rescue mission.

Here’s the video showing the vehicle sinking as people scream in desperation.
