Scarface, a legendary lion touted as one of the oldest in Maasai Mara died on Friday, June 11 at exactly 1pm.
According to Wild Heritage Species, Scarface passed away peacefully in a natural death.
“We are heartbroken to announce that the legendary ‘Scarface’ passed away today of natural causes in his beloved Mara home,” Read part of their statement.
The statement was supported by the Mara Predator Conservation program that revealed that Scarface died without any disturbances from vehicle or wild animals.
“He died in peace without any disturbance from vehicles and hyenas. We were the only vehicle on the scene and by his side, hoping to give him any kind of comfort,” said the Mara Predator Conservation Programme.
The lion got christened ‘Scarface’ mostly by tourists, following a Scar that he had on his face.
The lion, said to have died at the age of 14, was most famous and controlled a territory of over 400 square kilometers.
“For the last four years now, Scarface has been seen limping. There are no visible scars or injuries, but I think he is just getting old and his old injuries are catching up with him,” Tira, co-owner of Matira bush camp with Monika Braun stated in a previous interview.
