Sauti Sol Threatens to Sue Azimio over Copyright Infringement

Boy band Sauti Sol has threatened to sue Azimio One Kenya Alliance over copyright infringement.

The Raila Odinga-led coalition was put on the spot for using their hit song, Extravaganza during the unveiling of Azimio running mate Martha Karua.

A video shared by Azimio on social media had the song playing as Raila announced Karua as his deputy president nominee.

Reacting to the video, Sauti Sol clarified that they did not license the song to Azimio, further noting that they were apolitical.

“The Azimio la Umoja campaign through its flag bearer Raila Odinga’s social media platforms have without license nor authority used one of our more popular original compositions, Extravaganza, as a soundtrack to the announcement post of the running mate

“We did not license this song to the Azimio La Umoja campaign neither did we give any consent for its use in the announcement of their Vice-Presidential candidate,” Sauti Sol said in a statement.

The band maintained that Azimio’s move to use their song for campaign purposes amounted to copyright infringement.

“This action is a flagrant disregard of our basic and fundamental rights to property and freedom of association. Through their action they have taken away the right to own and control what is originally and solely our property,” Sauti Sol said.

“We shall be seeking legal remedy for this clear violation of our copyright,” the group added.

This comes barely a week after Raila paid Ksh 562,500 to the Music Copyright Society of Kenya as payment for a license to use local and international music during his campaigns.

The ODM leader conducted the payment process through his daughter Winnie Odinga following a meeting with the collective Management organization Licensing officer David Kiragu on May 7.

With the license, Raila will now be able to freely use local and international music during his campaigns.
