Former US President Barrack Obama’s grandmother Mama Sarah Anyango Obama has passed away.
The 99-year-old passed away while receiving treatment at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Hospital in Kisumu.
The news of the nonagenarian death was confirmed by her daughter Marsat Obama on Monday morning,March 29
“It’s true she went to be with her Lord,” Marsat said on phone overcome with emotion.
Marsat Onyango also said her mother had been in poor health for some time.
According to a close family member, plans are underway to have her laid to rest today at her home in Kogelo village, Siaya County.
“We are trying to see whether we shall be able to bury her today and if not, we shall bury her tomorrow,” a relative said.
Sarah Obama was a strong believer of the Islamic faith and is most likely to be buried today following the Islamic customs.
Anyango was the third wife to Hussein Onyango Obama who, the father Barrack Hussein Obama senior – the father to former Us President Barrack Obama.
Obama was very close to his grandmother and in 2018 he visited her at the family in K’Ogello.
Mama Sarah had taken up an initiative to care for needy children as well as helping widows at her village.
Following the news of Sarah Obama’s demise, the head of state President Uhuru Kenyatta led several leaders to condole the family.
Uhuru mourned her as a strong virtuous woman and an icon of family values and philanthropist whose whose marvelous contribution shall never be forgotten.
“The passing away of Mama Sarah is a big blow to our nation. We’ve lost a strong, virtuous woman. A matriarch who held together the Obama family and was an icon of family values,” said Uhuru.
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga also sent his condolences to the family.
“In the passing of Mama Sarah Obama, we have lost a matriarch who lived ahead of her time. She single-handedly kept the family going long after the husband departed.”
Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong’o sent his condolences to the family saying she was a great a friend “and a dear grandmother to all of us”.
“Mama Sarah Obama was not only a matriarch of the larger Obama family but a mother figure to many people. She was a philanthropist who helped to mobilise funds to pay school fees to many orphans and vulnerable children. She also supported many widows. May her soul rest in peace,” said the Kisumu governor.
