Mugabe died in Singapore where he has been receiving treatment.
Mugabe was ousted from power in a military coup in November 2017, ending his three-decade reign.
While announcing his death, Mugabe’s successor, Emmerson Mnangagwa eulogised the deceased leader as Zimbabwe’s founding father and an icon of liberation.
President Mnangagwa hailed Mugabe as an icon of liberation and a pan-Africanist who dedicated his life to the emancipation and empowerment of his people.
“Mugabe’s contribution to the history of our nation and continent will never be forgotten. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” he said.
Mugabe is famously remembered for his fiery speech in 2016 at AU summit in Addis Ababa where he told off the West and the United Nations to stop oppressing Africans.
