Mwalimu trained as a pilot in Philippines alongside his accomplice Cholo Abdi Abdulla who has since been arrested.

According to a report by Kenyans, Cholo and Mwalimu joined Al-Shabaab in 2015.

After their recruitment, they underwent training before carrying out attacks in Somalia.

They were later sent to Boni forest to be selected as a team for the pilot training.

The report added that the duo were close friends with the leader of the DusitD2 attack, one Salim Gichunge, alias Faruq and Osman Gedi.

It is said that Gichunge and Gedi were picked for the Dusit attack while Mwalimu and Cholo were trained as pilots after which they were deployed to hijack aeroplanes.

The report also revealed that Cholo was arrested in Philippines in 2019 while planning to hijack a plane and carry out an attack similar to the 9/11 style.
