ODM leader Raila Odinga has clapped back at Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria who warned Mt Kenya voters against supporting his presidential bid claiming he is uncircumcised.
On Friday, March 18, Kuria asked the GEMA community to adhere to an oath undertaken in 1969 at the late Mzee Jomo Kenyatta’s home where over 300,000 Kikuyus swore never to elect an uncircumcised leader as president.
The Chama Cha Kazi party leader insisted that the 1969 oath must be undone to free Kikuyus who wish to vote for the Azimio La Umoja presidential candidate, lest they be cursed.
“In 1969 when you are under siege you rally 300,000 Kikuyus to take an oath-at a fee- binding them never to elect an uncircumcised person. 50 years later without calling for another oath to undo the first one, you unilaterally make an about-turn and expect the whole community to follow you. I DO NOT believe that circumcision is any test of leadership and there was everything wrong with the 1969 oath and the community Elders should hold a ceremony to unbind the community from that oath and for closure. But this has to be a community issue and we can not trust you to play with the emotions of our community willy-nilly,” said Kuria.
The lawmaker’s sentiments caused a storm on social media with the majority rebuking him, terming his remarks as insensitive and hateful.
Are you gay?
Breaking his silence on the matter, the former premier insisted that some cultures such as circumcision should not be a measure of a competent leader.
Speaking in Busia on Friday, March 25, Raila told off Kuria questioning him why he was obsessed with his genitals.
“My first question, how do you know that Raila is not circumcised? Secondly, you are a man like Raila, what is your business with his body parts. Why haven’t we seen the ladies complaining? You must be gay to raise such matters,” said Raila in Swahili.
Raila’s retort elicited mixed reactions on social media.
Lilyanne Aketch said: “Exactly a man who is so bothered with Baba’s ginene or any Luo’s ginene is gay.”
Cathy Larry said: “You are baba. People should respect you. Where has respect gone in our country? Shame on those talking about circumcision.”
John Ojango said: “Well put Rao! People should concentrate on matters affecting “Wanjiku”.
Wanjoki Karoki said: “He wasn’t raised well too. Mama Ngina told us whoever is vulgar want raised well.”
Rowena Samwel said: “And then you tell us those people speak like that in public are brought up poorly, Anyway I love Kenya my motherland.”
Lucy Msoga said: “It is good for everyone to be concerned about their tools only. Wachana na vyombo vya wenyewe.”
