Raila Odinga Heckled by Rowdy Youth While Campaigning in Iten

ODM leader Raila Odinga on Friday, April 1, toured Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet county, to popularise his presidential bid ahead of the August 9 General Elections.

However, the Azimio la Umoja presidential flagbearer had a hard time selling his agenda in the vote-rich region which is believed to be Deputy President William Ruto’s stronghold.

He started his campaign by holding an indoor meeting at the Iten Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) before addressing a gathering in Iten town.

However, while in the town, the Opposition leader was forced to end his rally prematurely after a group of rowdy youth started heckling him, chanting the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) slogans.

In a video seen by, Raila, in his speech detailed to the crowd what he will do when elected the president, but when he asked them to say ‘Inawezekani’, the locals responded ‘Ruto’.

Efforts by the police to calm down the crowd proved futile as they did not allow Raila to continue to address them.

He then drove away together with the politicians that had accompanied him including Suna East MP Junet Mohamed and his Embakasi East counterpart Babu Owino.

Raila’s heckling elicited mixed reactions on social media.

Nuels MK said: “People has bad advisors. How can BBI flop on Thursday, then on Friday he is in Ruto’s strongholds?”

Vassy Kageni said: Pole wait ground to cool from BBI pain. You are adding salt to a wounded place… Ruto the 5th… We are still celebrating the BBI failure.”

Kennedy Owuo said: “Kenyans should be tolerant and embrace peace, those drums of war should go silent we don’t want to join the chorus.”
