ODM leader Raila Odinga has claimed the Precious Talent School tragedy could have been avoided had county authorities not slept on the job.
The former prime minister who spoke at Dagoretti grounds during the memorial mass of eight pupils who perished in the Monday, September 23 incident called on the county authorities to step up their game and ensure all buildings meet standards for human habitation.
“ This is not an accident. This was premeditated,” said Raila.
He called on county and national government agencies to be pro-active to ensure greedy businessmen are not allowed to put substandard structures.
“ It shouldn’t happen that we wait for a tragedy to happen then come here and shed crocodile tears,” he said.
Raila said even though many substandard structures had been brought down, many others were spared as they belonged to influential businessmen.
“ There were a lot of buildings are below par but which were never demolished..we want capitalism with human face,” said the ODM leader to the applause of the residents.
The September 23 morning incident left eight dead and over 60 injured.
Others present include Dagoretti South MP John Kiarie, Nairobi Woman Rep Esther Passaris, nominated Senator Millicent Omanga and Jubilee candidate, McDonald Mariga.
