A new opinion poll has placed Azimio One Kenya Alliance presidential flag bearer Raila Odinga at the top just days after unveiling his running mate.
The Azimio flag bearer announced Martha Karua as his deputy president nominee in a brief event on Monday, May 16.
According to a poll by Trends & Insights for Africa (TIFA) conducted on Tuesday, May 17, Raila led the presidential race with 39 percent.
On the other hand, Deputy President William Ruto who named Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua as his running mate came in second with 35 percent.
This is a drop from 39 percent three weeks ago.
TIFA says the poll sampled 1,719 respondents spread across the country who were interviewed by phone.
The respondents were picked from regions subdivided as Central Rift, Coast, Lower Eastern, Mt Kenya, Nairobi, Northern, Nyanza, South Rift, and Western, and divided as according to the population.
“The reason for conducting this survey so soon should be obvious, however; the announcement, in quick succession over the last few days, of the deputy presidential running-mates of the two main presidential candidates – William Ruto and Raila Odinga – followed immediately by the announcement by Kalonzo Musyoka, previously associated with Odinga’s Azimio la Umoja coalition, that he would contest the presidency as well, and the identification of his own running mate,” TIFA said.
DP Ruto’s new tally is a drop from 38 percent in November 2021 and February 2022 and 39 per cent in April this year.
For Raila, the new tally is a steady rise from 23 percent in November 2021, 27 percent in February 2022 and 32 percent in April.
