The Jubilee Party has settled on Equity Group Chief Commercial Officer Polycarp Igathe to fly the party’s flag in the Nairobi gubernatorial race.
The party issued a direct ticket to Igathe doing away with party primaries which would have allowed Nairobians to vote for their preferred candidate.
Jubilee which is a member party of Azimio One Kenya coalition had other hopefuls including businessman Richard Ngatia, Agnes Kagure and Governor Ann Kananu.
On the other hand, ODM had cleared Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi to contest for the seat.
However, following a meeting at State House, the four were dropped out of the race and a direct ticket issued to Igathe.
Wanyonyi would deputize Igathe who has since resigned from his position at the Equity Bank Group Holdings.
The meeting was chaired by President Uhuru Kenyatta and his handshake partner Raila Odinga.
Igathe and Wanyonyi will now face Senator Johnson Sakaja who will be vying for the seat on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party ticket.
As earlier reported, Uhuru who is the chair of Azimio reportedly led a similar meeting that saw Mombasa tycoon Suleiman Shahbal drop his gubernatorial bid in favor of Mvita MP Abdulswamad Sheriff.
A source privy to the same indicated that Shahbal had refused to step down forcing the intervention of President Uhuru Kenyatta who is Azimio la Umoja chair.
“After it was clear that he would not budge. Baba (Raila) made a call to President Uhuru who talked Shahbal out of the race. He had no option really
“He found himself between the sitting president and the possibly incoming president. He had no option. He is also a businessman whose empire thrives on the goodwill of the government,” a source was quoted by Standard.
