Hollywood star Will Smith caused drama on Oscar Stage at the 94th Academy Awards after slapping comedian Chris Rock over a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett.
According to reports, Rock appeared on stage to present the Oscar for documentary when he made the joke about Smith’s wife.
The comic suggested Pinkett looked like Demi Moore’s appearance in the film “G.I. Jane”.
Offended by the joke, Smith confronted Rock and slapped him before walking back to his seat.
He then yelled at Rock warning him to respect his wife.
“Keep my wife’s name out of your fucking mouth,” Smith shouted at the comic.
The incident sparked mixed reactions with netizens picking sides.
@BlackStarDiva: Sorry to drag @rickygervais into this but his jokes at the Golden Globes were brutal. Brutal. No one slapped him because he’s a comedian. @chrisrock didn’t deserve this and Will Smith ruined what should have been one of the best nights of his life.
@razorfist: If that’s how Will Smith reacts to a joke about his wife, boy. It’s a good thing nobody made a pass at her.
@salma: Will Smith said “not today”. A man big enough to absolutely floor him, slapped him softly enough that Chris barely moved, because he made fun of his wife’s alopecia on a world stage. Don’t say #protectBlackwomen for two years and then only condemn Will here. Come on.
@jayythedope: If Chris Rock had hit Will Smith back, we all would have said Chris Rock is a bad person right? Firstly, we all need to applaud his professionalism for not hitting Will Smith back. The words Will Smith said at the end could have been said instead of slapping him and he’d stop.
Following the incident, Los Angeles Police Department said Rock had declined to file a police report following the altercation with Smith.
“LAPD investigative entities are aware of an incident between two individuals during the Academy Awards program. The incident involved one individual slapping another
“The individual involved has declined to file a police report. If the involved party desires a police report at a later date, LAPD will be available to complete an investigative report,” the statement read.
Smith won best actor for King Richard after the incident and issued an apology in his acceptance speech.
“I want to apologize to the Academy. I want to apologize to all my fellow nominees. This is a beautiful moment and I’m not crying for winning an award. It’s not about winning an award for me. It’s about being able to shine a light on all of the people,” he said.
Pinkett shaved her hair after struggling with alopecia.
“Now at this point, I can only laugh. Y’all know I’ve been struggling with alopecia. Mama’s gonna have to take it down to the scalp so nobody thinks she got brain surgery or something. Me and this alopecia are going to be friends,” she announced.
