A man from Nakuru County identified as Samuel Mwendwa Mutua has been arrested after defrauding a nursing home KSh 984,000 in a fake procurement deal.
The man was nabbed by police officers on Wednesday, June 23 after the Hospital in Molo Sub-County reported about the incident.
It is reported that he had assured the St Joseph Maternity and Nursing Home to deliver Hospital equipment via his company called World Freight Logistics Limited but went silent on them.
“Fraud suspect Samuel Mwendwa Mutua defrauded a hospital for over KSh 948,000 in a false shipping deal; the suspect, whose company trades as World Freight Logistics Limited, had in 2020 been contracted by St. Joseph’s Maternity and Nursing Home to import hospital equipment procured in an expansion program,” DCI explained via Twitter.
The 50-year-old man was to deliver hospital beds, mortuary equipment, theatre beds and a dental chair which were imported from abroad.
The Hospital disbursed the amount into his account hoping to receive the equipments but Mutua failed to communicate nor deliver them as per their agreement.
At first he received, KSh 407,000 on November 6, 2020 freight charges following a merge by a China-based vendor making the shipment into a 40-feet container and settled it on Oceanus International Logistics (Shenzen) Co. Ltd.
A second payment of KSh 158,000 was done directly to the suspects account in December, 8 2020 to cater for shipping line charges and container deposits.
The hospital was asked for another KSh 383,000 in April 4, 2021 and another KSh 200,000 for Kenya Ports Authority rent and KSh 183,000 for the World Freight Logistics agency fee.
After the last payments, the Hospital realized they were conned and quickly reported the matter to DCI.
