The Azimio One Kenya Alliance has unveiled its contenders for the top elective Nairobi county seats that will be facing off with their competitors in the forthcoming August 9 General Election.
In the line-up that was announced by the alliance’s presidential candidate ODM leader Raila Odinga, corporate guru Polycarp Igathe was unveiled as Azimio’s Nairobi gubernatorial seat candidate.
The former Equity Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) will be deputised by the former Kibwezi MP Philip Kaloki.
Together, they will be seeking to trounce Senator Johnson Sakaja, who has been fronted by their rivals Kenya Kwanza Alliance, led by Deputy President William Ruto.
Also in the line-up, Westlands MP who was eyeing the same seat has dropped his ambition and will instead be defending his seat, battling it out with vocal lawyer Nelson Havi who is vying on Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.
Speaking at Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), Raila further announced that businessman Richard Ngatia, who was also seeking the city’s top had also agreed to step down and support Igathe.
Consequently, Ngatia was appointed as President Uhuru Kenyatta’s advisor on trade.
Businesswoman Agnes Kagure who left before the announcement said she will be vying for the gubernatorial seat as an independent candidate.
Azimio also announced that the outspoken ODM secretary-general Edwin Sifuna will be contesting for the Nairobi Senatorial seat in the forthcoming political duel.
Sifuna will be seeking to triumph over Bishop Margaret Wanjiru who has been fronted by Kenya Kwanza among other aspirants.
Finally, the alliance, which is chaired by Uhuru said Esther Passaris will be flying its flag to defend her Nairobi woman representative seat.
Passaris will be contesting against Kenya Kwanza’s Millicent Omanga, who opinion polls have indicated stands a better chance to clinch the seat.
In his speech, Raila said the line-up was arrived at after extensive consultations.
“We have had a meeting here, as the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition, and today we were talking about our Nairobi team. There have been consultations that have been going on for the last few days, and I’m happy to report that we have concluded and we’re ready now to unveil Team Nairobi for Azimio la Umoja One Kenya,” he said.
