Mike Mbuvi Sonko, the former Nairobi governor buttressed by court cases and political bad storms, has joined the race for the Mombasa governor seat.
The Wiper Democratic Movement submitted Sonko’s name to the Independent Electroral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) as among those cleared by the Kalonzo Musyoka led party to participate in the party primaries.
The ex Nairobi county boss is expected to battle it out with Kisauni MP Ali Mbogo who is also after the Wiper ticket.
Billionaire entrepreneur Suleiman Shahbal is battling for the ODM ticket, same as Mvita MP Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir.
Kalonzo officially welcomed Sonko to the Wiper party on March 25.
All along, Sonko has kept his supporters guessing, with speculations rife he was going to contest for either the Nairobi or Machakos governor seat.
Wiper is under the Azimio La Umoja coalition which is backing ODM leader Raila Odinga’s presidential bid.
Sonko is seemingly staging a comeback into the active political scene after a lengthy break occasioned by his ouster from Nairobi’s top seat.
After his impeachment in December 2020, anchored on violation of the Constitution, abuse of office and gross misconduct, he resorted to a low-key profile often spending time in his personal businesses.
