Maryanne Oketch: Kenyan Woman Born to Canadian Mum Crowned 42nd Winner of Survivor Series

A 24-year-old Canadian woman born to a Kenyan mother has been crowned the 42nd winner of reality series, Survivor. 

Maryanne Oketch, a seminary student from Ontario won KSh 116 million after emerging top in the hotly contested season finale. 

She won by a 7-1-0 vote in the tight race that came as a stunner to both her, her fellow contestants and the fans. 

Her fellow contestants viewed her as the weakest link in the show but she managed to carry all the way to the end. 

Oketch turned out to be a strategist which sealed the deal for her in the season finale.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the 24-year-old said she was engulfed with emotions since the season finale. 

“I was an emotional wreck crying every day after returning home,” she disclosed.

This comes a week after Kenyan nurse Ana Qabale Duba won the Aster Guardian Global Nursing Award and awarded pocketed KSh 29 million in prize money. 

Qabale who is stationed at Marsabit County Referral Hospital won the award for endorsing education and campaigning against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in her community.

She dedicated the award to her departed brother Malicha Duba Sora, noting that were it not for him she might not have become a nurse.  

“I dedicate this Global Nursing Award to my late brother Malicha Duba Sora, he used every coin he had to take me to a private Kenya Methodist University to pursue my nursing career

“Unfortunately he was killed while I was just in the first semester of my study,” she recounted.
