Lulu Hassan Reveals How Stranger Influenced Her to Get Into TV

Celebrated Swahili news anchor Lulu Hassan has narrated her journey to the top in her media career.

Speaking in an interview on Hot 96 FM, the journalist disclosed that she was working as a receptionist in Mombasa when a stranger complimented her voice.

The man he identified as Anthony kept in touch with Lulu and asked her if she has ever considered trying radio or TV.

Lulu gained interest and started pursuing media.

“It started in 2005, nilikuwa receptionist in Mombasa company ilikuwa inaitwa Tech Biz limited, and it dealt with computers. So whenever I picked calls, there is a guy called Anthony, I’ve never met him but nakumbuka to date, aliniambia madam, I love your voice have you ever thought of doing radio or TV? I was like, sijawai skia kitu kama hii but then nilianza ku-gain interest,” she said.

Lulu said she would get newspapers from her workplace and practice lines before her mother who, just like Anthony, encouraged her to pursue media.

After some time, she applied for a job at a local radio station and got her first job as a part-time radio news anchor.

“Kwa one of the newspapers niliona, they were advertising for TV presenters, news anchors and radio presenters, I applied but back then sikuwa nimesomea journalism nilisema let me try. Nilikuwa nafanya kama part-time, I used to do news alafu naenda college,” Lulu said.

Lulu also disclosed that her mother passed away before she joined school to pursue journalism.

“This is something my mom wanted, alikuwa ashasema mimi nataka wewe ufanye TV, ilikuwa breakthrough but she passed on nikiwa radio,” she said.
