Linet Toto: UDA’s Bomet Woman Rep Aspirant Says Mum Discouraged Her from Politics

It was a dream come true for a 24-year-old Bomet woman representative aspirant Linet Chepkorir after she clinched the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket in the party’s primaries.

Chepkorir, alias Toto, garnered 53,944 votes to emerge the victor among nine other aspirants in the Thursday, April 14, exercise that was marred with chaos and rigging allegations.

Speaking on Friday, April 15, after being handed the UDA nomination certificate to contest for the seat currently held by Joyce Korir, Toto disclosed that her mother was initially against her move to join politics.

The vicenarian, a Bachelor of Business Administration graduate from Chuka University, said her mother had implored her to instead focus on her professional career.

“My mother was so much opposed to my decision to join politics. She wanted me to concentrate on my career after finishing school,” said Toto.

The politician, who is the youngest aspirant for any political seat in the whole of Bomet County, added that her mother was worried about where she would get funds to finance her campaigns.

Also, Toto’s mother expressed reservations about her political ambitions due to her young age.

The aspirant recounted her relatives dismissing her as a joyrider in the race, but she did not lose hope.

“They told me I was still young and could not fund my campaigns and that I should abandon that dream but I stood my ground,” she added.

In a previous interview, Toto said she resolved to join politics after she failed to secure a job after graduating in 2021.

She said potential employers were always demanding experienced recruits, locking her out.

In February 2022, Toto sparked mixed reactions after claiming that she was barred from accessing Deputy President William Ruto’s Karen residence.

Toto noted that she was blocked from the meeting, although people whom she had travelled with from Bomet were ushered into the compound.

She later produced her passcode that secured her entry into the heavily guarded residence.

“Eventually, after about an hour, I was allowed into the compound after I showed them my passcode to the meeting, which was electronically generated from the KSh 6,000 payment I had made as registration fee for the session,” Toto said.
