Likoni ferry: Photo of woman, daughter in vehicle that plunged into Indian Ocean emerges

A photo of woman and child who drowned at the Likoni crossing channel has emerged.

According to a source who spoke to, the photo that is doing rounds in social media is indeed that of Mariam Kighenda and her daughter Amanda Mutheu who was a pupil at MM Shah Academy.

The two were in the car that slid back from the MV Harambee ferry mid-stream on Sunday evening, September 29.

Eyewitnesses recounted an attempt to help the woman by throwing a lifesaver at them to no avail as the occupants were trapped inside the vehicle.

I saw the woman and a boy inside the car. She had started screaming and calling for help when the car started to reverse. I threw a life saver at them,” said Mlei Majaliwa who was in the same ferry as quoted by Nation.

There was conflicting reports on the exact number of people inside the vehicle at the time of the accident with police sources citing four as Red Cross put the the number at 2.

“They might be dead because the incidence happened an hour ago and its deep sea,” said Benjamin Rotich, Likoni sub-county police commander.

Kenya Ferry Services currently in talks with the Kenya Navy to get more oxygen, Nation reported.

On Monday morning, The Kenya Ferry Services bore the brunt of irate Kenyans who castigated the parastatal for not properly briefing Kenyans about the incident.
