Kithure Kindiki Emerges Frontrunner to Be William Ruto’s Running Mate

Tharaka Nithi Senator Kithure Kindiki is seemingly the most preferred candidate to be Deputy President William Ruto’s running mate, has learned.

A team tasked to recommend Ruto’s deputy in the forthcoming August 9 General Election has reportedly zeroed in on Kindiki, even though the second in command will make the final call.

Sources within the Kenya Kwanza Alliance intimated to The Standard that Kindiki scored highly among other candidates that were up for consideration.

The senator had been shortlisted alongside the outspoken Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua as the most suitable candidates as they both hail from the vote-rich Mt Kenya region.

Other contenders for the number 2 position were Kirinyaga governor Anne Waiguru and the National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi.

However, the selection panel reportedly left out Muturi as he joined the Kenya Kwanza recently. His relationship with President Uhuru Kenyatta was also considered still too close.

Gachagua was also top on the list but among the factors that worked against him include that he is facing court battles.

Consequently, the team fronted Kindiki citing a number of reasons including his experience as a two-term Senator, Majority Leader, and the upper House’s Deputy Speaker.

He also passed the loyalty test as he has stood by Ruto way before he became the deputy president.

He also paid the price over his inclination to the DP after he was ousted from his Deputy Speaker position in a Jubilee Party purge.

Also, Kindiki, who is a law scholar, led Ruto’s defence team at the International Criminal Court (ICC).

A move by the Kenya Kwanza to front Kindiki as Ruto’s running mate elicited varied reactions.

Joseph Akal Otieno said: “Ruto is simply trying to throw his opponents off balance. I’m absolutely sure that this is meant for keeping people busy as he prepares to unveil his real running mate. Kithure Kindiki will not be Ruto’s running mate.

Elizabeth Mwende said: “My business is voting for Dr Ruto. I don’t care who he chooses to assist him.”

Patrick Muriuki said: “The mountain is already consolidated. We need a genius not a mouth piece; with drama and side shows. Someone who’ll assure respect to the presidency; KINDIKI is that gentleman.”

Vivienne Adala said: “Ruto does not want to pick a strong character from Mt Kenya. He wants to remain their kingpin!”
