Khalwale Steps Down in Favour of Malala in Kakamega Governor Race

Former Kakamega senator Boni Khalwale will not contest for the Kakamega gubernatorial seat in the August 9 General Elections. 

Khalwale bolted out of the race in favour of Senator Cleophas Malala for the position that is currently being held by Wycliffe Oparanya who is set to leave following the completion of his two terms. 

Following the new development, Khalwale, a staunch supporter of Deputy President William Ruto will be going for the county’s senatorial seat.

The announcement was made by DP Ruto on Wednesday, March 23. 

“We realised that for us to win the seat, these two leaders have on their own motion engaged in discussions and escalated their negotiations to us. We listened and agreed with them. Whatever they agreed on will have the endorsement of the Kenya Kwanza team

“I want to announce that for Kakamega, Khalwale has graciously accepted to for the senator’s seat and ceded ground for Malala to vie for the governor’s seat,” DP Ruto said. 

Malala is one of the key Amani National Congress (ANC) leaders who influenced party leader Musalia Mudavadi to join the DP’s camp.

After the Musalia-Ruto deal was sealed, it was rumoured that the Governor seat was part of the negotiation.
