Panic engulfed Kericho GK Prison after 48 inmates and staff tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday, August 20.
The virus infections were recorded from 75 samples collected at the correctional facility during a mass testing exercise conducted by Kericho County Department of Health.
A statement by Kericho Governor Paul Chepkwony indicated that the mass testing was as a result of a spike in positive COVID-19 cases in the county.
The county boss said the infected persons are in stable condition, adding that the county government together with the prison management has put proper containment measures in place.
“Consequently, the Department of Health and the Prisons Management have put in place appropriate measures to curb the spread,” Chepkwony said.
Chepkwony also urged residents with relatives in the facility to stay calm as the situation is under control.
He further revealed that 61 patients were currently being treated in various health facilities within the county while 52 others were receiving care under the home-based care programme.
The county has recorded 63 recoveries and 2 fatalities since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
