Kalonzo Musyoka Barred from Running for Presidency on Wiper as It’s Still Under Azimio

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has suffered a blow in his presidential bid after the Registrar of Political Parties asked the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) not to clear him.

Kalonzo, who was initially a member of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition, cut ties with the outfit after it settled on Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua to be Raila Odinga’s running mate.

Consequently, the former vice president submitted his name to the electoral agency seeking to vie for the presidency on his Wiper ticket.

While making the announcement on Monday, May 16, the politician unveiled Andrew Sunkuli as his running mate in the polls slated for August 9.

However, the Registrar of Political Parties Anne Nderitu in a letter to the IEBC argued that Kalonzo cannot run for the top seat on a Wiper ticket since it is still a constituent party under Azimio.

Sources at the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties revealed that Wiper was yet to formally seek to exit the coalition two months after signing up, through its Secretary-General Shakila Abdalla’s signature.

Therefore, with Raila having been named the Azimio coalition party presidential flag bearer, it would be impossible for a constituent party such as Wiper to field a presidential candidate.

It is worth noting that the agreement signed while forming Azimio bars constituent parties from abandoning the outfit six months to the general election or three months after the August polls.

On her part, Nderitu is insisting that due process must be followed by any party opting out of a coalition which is chaired by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The only option that Kalonzo has is either to seek a court order to exit the coalition or be discharged by mutual consent by the party’s leadership.

It is however reported that there are efforts to convince Kalonzo to rejoin the Azimio team with KANU chairman Gideon Moi handling the assignment.

He has since been promised a chief minister position should Raila win the presidency.
