A 66-year-old man was rushed to the hospital after suffering a short-term amnesia also known as Transient Global Amnesia (TGA) moments after having sex with his wife.
According to the case published in the Irish Medical Journal, the man of Irish descent lost his short-term memory within 10 minutes of sex.
Doctors explained that sex triggered the amnesia which was described as an episode of sudden transient global amnesia that is not caused by more common neuropathy such as epilepsy or stroke.
After engaging in sexual intercourse, the man looked at the date on his phone and stressed that he had forgotten his wedding anniversary which was a day before.
The man was stressed about the wedding anniversary although he had celebrated it.
“He had, in fact, celebrated his wedding anniversary with his wife and family on the previous day. His autobiographical memory remained intact, but he had no memory of that morning or the celebrations the night before,” the report said.
“He repetitively questioned his wife and daughter over the events of that morning and the previous day.”
His neurological examination was completely normal when he visited a local emergency room and regained his memory a little later.
Doctors who authored the report say TGA typically lasts 4 to 6 hours without the need for any treatment. Sometimes, it can last upto 24 hours.
“Precipitation of TGA has been linked with several activities including physical activity, immersion in cold or hot water, emotional stress, pain and sexual intercourse,” the doctors said.
