A 94-year-old man has returned home after disappearing for 42 years in search of greener pastures.
Hiltan Kalugho recently reunited with his family in Majengo village in Mwatate, Taita Taveta County after leaving for Tanzania in 1980 to better his life.
Speaking in an interview with Nation, the old man stated that he wanted a good future for his wife and seven kids but he could not return home because he did not secure the money he wanted.
Following his return back home, Kalugho noted that he was devastated to learn that his wife and two of their children had died.
His wife, Dreda Mshai passed away in 2007 aged 75.
“I feel so bad that some of my family members are not here to witness this reunion. I had longed to see my wife and all my children,” said Kalugho.
While in Tanzania, Kalugho first worked as a gemstone miner before he was taken in by another family which tasked him with taking care of livestock.
Kalugho’s son, Mnjala Mwaluma, said after unfruitful searches for their father over the years, he was called by the pastor to inform him that he had been found in Tanzania.
“Recently I received a call from a pastor telling me my father had been traced in Tanzania. He came with him to Mombasa where we went to meet him,” said MwalumaHiltan Kalugho: 94-year-old Man Reunites with Family after Leaving Home in 1980.
