A secondary school student was arrested and arraigned for allegedly stealing money from a police officer’s account.
According to reports, Gideon Rotich who sat for his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams at Ngito Secondary School withdrew KSh 331,850 from Nelson Koech’s Police Sacco account.
The court was told that Rotich did the transactions between July and September 2020, using a mobile number registered under his mother’s name.
Koech who worked in Garissa during the aforesaid period said he noticed something was wrong when he visited an ATM to withdraw some cash.
He then filed a complaint at the Sacco officers, and requested a statement after which he realised that some withdrawals had been made on diverse dates.
Investigators handling the case traced the mobile phone number to Sarah Chelangat, Rotich’s mother.
Chelagat admitted that her son had used her national ID to register the mobile number in question.
The mother said Rotich had told her he had won some money from sports betting and another sent to his line from a police Sacco.
She added that the suspect wanted to build a house, a proposal the family rejecting prompting him to leave home.
