The political elites in
Kenya are closely related. In fact, some of the people we see bandying words
are actually related.
It is noteworthy these ties run
deep and it is the reason some politicians are quickly reabsorbed in
government after losing elections.
Defence Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa
recently detailed their long friendship and family ties with President Uhuru Kenyatta’s
Wamalwa said the two family’s camaraderie started all way back
between his father William Wamalwa and Uhuru’s father Mzee Jomo Kenyatta.
The CS said the senior Wamalwa, during his tenure as Western Kenya
region chief and Member of Parliament, worked closely with the late Jomo,
Kenya’s first president.
In an interview with Daily Nation on Saturday, March 5, Wamalwa
disclosed that his late brother, Kijana, married from the Kenyatta’s, further
strengthening their ties.
Kijana, Kenya’s eighth vice-president, married Dr Njoroge Mungai’s
daughter Gathoni Mungai. Mungai was a first cousin of Jomo Kenyatta.
“Gathoni was Dr Njoroge Mungai’s daughter and the likes of
Beth Mugo, Ngengi Muigai—you know their relationship with the Kenyatta’s.
Through that, we had very close ties and friendships,” said Wamalwa.
The soft-spoken CS said the close friendship made his late brother
Kijana contemplate becoming Uhuru’s running mate in the 2002 General Election.
However, he said Mwai Kibaki successfully persuaded him to join
the NARC, a coalition that ended Daniel Moi’s rule.
“What Kenyans do not know is that there was a time Mike
almost considered becoming Uhuru’s running mate. They were very close, but
former president Mwai Kibaki got his way with Mike,” said Wamalwa.
Further in the interview, Wamalwa said he knew Uhuru even before
he became the president in 2012 and they are great friends.
