In most instances, it is those aspiring for various political seats in Kenya who are expected to line the pockets of the electorates, at least according to Kenya’s political campaigns culture.
It is on this backdrop that Kericho gubernatorial seat hopeful Erick Mutai was moved to tears after his supporters fundraised money to finance his campaigns.
While campaigning in Litein on Saturday, April 9, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) politician told his supporters that he did not have enough money to fund his campaigns.
Mutai’s revelation prompted locals to hold an impromptu fundraiser and raised an unknown amount of money.
The aspirants stood on top of his branded vehicle as locals handed notes to him, shortly before a member from his campaign team could be seen fetching the money with a carrier bag.
Moved by the resident’s gesture, Mutai could be seen shedding tears.
The money was to be used to fund Mutai’s campaigns by fueling his campaign vehicles and paying his aides.
The new development sparked reactions with netizens applauding locals for the kind gesture towards the gubernatorial seat aspirant.
@JahredRon: Kericho has always voted sober leadership for Governor. Hizi zingine sio big deal, but governor hawachezangi nayo.
@Babamaria007: This is how politics should be, we should be the ones funding our preferred candidates. In this model, we shun the politics of tokenism, and waiting to be bought. This is pure love.
@VictorN: This is unprecedented in Kenya politics!I salute these great people of Litien.
@bismaake: A better way to show keter that he failed them and he ate alone and the people around him. Now it was their turn to be around and show support to their preferred candidate.
