Dr Chibanzi Mwachonda: Acting KMPDU secretary-general tests positive for COVID-19

The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) acting secretary-general, Dr Chibanzi Mwachonda has tested positive for COVID-19.

Dr Chibanzi made the news public through a statement indicating that he is stable condition and currently under self-isolation.

“On behalf of the National Executive Council, I would like to inform all KMPDU members and the general public that I have tested positive for COVID-19,” reads part of the statement.

“I’m currently in stable condition and under self-isolation. My family is safe, contact tracing and testing of all close contacts is ongoing,” the statement added.

He urged Kenyans to observe the set containment measures in order to put the virus at bay.

“I urge all Kenyans to adhere to the Ministry of Health Prevention Measures of putting on your masks, washing your hands, avoiding unnecessary movement and gatherings in order to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and enable us to flatten the curve as a country,” he added.

To the healthcare providers, Dr Chibanzi said;

“To my colleagues on the frontline, we soldier on in the service to humanity cognizant of the great risk of infection to all of us.”

He also urged the government to provide utmost support to its frontline soldiers.

This, he said is by providing adequate and quality PPEs and unveil the welfare package on work injury benefits and comprehensive medical treatment.

He noted that he contracted the virus while undertaking his official duties.

The vocal doctor is among over 600 medics who have tested positive for COVID-19.
