DCI detectives arrest prison officer accused of conning job seekers

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Friday,May 21 arrested Grace Nyamohanga, alias Nasra, a Senior Sergeant at Lang’ata Women Prison, alleged to have swindled job seekers off KSh 200 million.

In a statement released by the sleuths, Nasra is a group leader of a mafia organization that recruits desperate job seekers, with the promise of job opportunities.

The opportunities are in government parastatals and security agencies in example, Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), National Intelligence Service, (NIS), and the National Police Service (NPS).

“Among the dozens of fake offer letters in our possession that were seized from her house, the suspects have recruited job seekers from across all levels of education and academic disciplines including graduates in Mathematics, Computer Science and Microbiology among others,” said the DCI.

A woman from Kiambu County reported that the organization conned her over KSh 800,000.

The cons promised to offer her three childrens job opportunities in various government sectors.

To make it look more legit the lady was asked to take her children at the respective institutions so that they can commence work from the vacant positions.

The woman, however, told DCI that she noted something was wrong after the meetings got cancelled twice over Covid-19 claims.

It was when she took the the matter to police station.

“In January 2021, the suspects had in a well-coordinated and orchestrated plot, recruited over 60 job seekers who were offered forged letters of appointment, inviting them to join the Kenya Airports Authority,” wrote the DCI.


“The victims, who each parted with colossal sums of money ranging from Ksh300,000 to Ksh400,000 depending on one’s level of education, were even driven to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, ostensibly to familiarize themselves with what would be their new work environment.”

Detectives further reported that the individuals were accompanied by a suspected who claimed to be the Human Resource Manager.

They were taken at a high profile facility along Mombasa road where they were fed by the suspects.

They were then asked to go back to their respective homes and come back on March 18, 2021. Since that day they have not heard from the thugs again.

Nasra is reported to have been working closely with other wards in the con job and obtain the money and remit to her.

A warder is said to have collected over KSh 19 million million while another one collected over KSh 6 million.

Detectives also reported that they found fake U.S. dollars translating to KSh 2.4 million in Nyamohanga’s house at the Industrial Area G.K Prison staff quarters.

“Two suspects have since been arrested while the main suspect Kenya Prison’s Senior Sergeant Grace Nyamohanga alias ‘Nasra’ is still at large,” said the DCI.
