Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Tuesday night, August 11 arrested former Garsen MP Danson Mungatana for allegedly obtaining money by false pretenses forgery and making of a false document.
According to a report by the DCI, Mungatana was arrested at a City Hotel alongside one Collins Paul Waweru.
The report also indicated that two others managed to escape from the hotel where the two suspects were nabbed.
Mungatana and his associates had allegedly received KSh 1 million to assist a businesswoman secure a KSh70 million military tender to supply cereals and building materials.
However, after a thorough scrutiny on the tender documents, they turned out to be fake.
“Before presenting the fake tender documents, the victim had allegedly paid KSh 1,000,000 so as to be assisted to win a KSh 70M cereals and building tenders and was to pay another KSh 1,000,000 before detectives pounced on the two at a hotel in the CBD,” reads a tweet from DCI.
According to the businesswoman identified as Everlyne Njoki, she showed up at the Military Police Unit at the Department of Defence (DoD) offices with tender documents purported to have originated from them.
When the Military Police scrutinised the documents, they established that they were fake.
Njoki told the officers that she was given the documents by a person who claimed he was a senior military officer at DoD in charge of tenders.
A police report indicated that Njoki gave Mungatana the amount on July 14, 2020.
The former lawmaker is currently being held at Kilimani Police Station.
