Claims Rigathi Gachagua Is Daniel Moi’s Son are False

After months of speculation, Mathira MP Ragathi Gachagua was named Deputy President William Ruto’s running mate in the forthcoming August 9 General Election.

The Kenya Kwanza Alliance settled on Gachagua after 17 hours of deliberation held at Ruto’s official Karen residence in Nairobi on the morning of Saturday, May 14.

Gachagua appointment elicited varied reactions on social media with Ruto’s critics expressing reservations about his suitability given that he has active corruption cases in court.

At the same time, an old black and white photo emerged on social media claiming that Rigathi was the son of Kenya’s second president Daniel arap Moi.

The photo seen by GOTTA.news shows Moi and his wife Lena Bomett Moi, surrounded by their seven children.

The image further shows a face of a small boy circled with “Rigathi Gachagua” written beneath.

But is the photo evidence that Gachagua is Moi’s son? Africa Check reported that there is an original caption below the photo.

It reads:

“Moi’s Family (1966) (from right to left) – Jonathan Kipkemboi, Jennifer Chemutai, John Mark, Doris Chepkorir, Gideon Kipsielei, Rigathi Kiprono, and Raymond Kipruto.”
There’s no mention of Rigathi Gachagua.

fact check desk further established that the boy whose face is circled looks nothing like Gachagua.

Gachagua’s parents are Martha Kirigo and Nahashon Gachagua Reriani and not Moi as alleged.

The former Mathira lawmaker was born in central Kenya’s Nyeri county and is Kikuyu.
