Breakthrough as Aga Khan University Hospital Performs East Africa’s First Penile Implant

Doctors at the Agha Khan University Hospital in Nairobi have performed the first-ever penile implant procedure in East and Central Africa.

This is after medics at the institution treated an erectile dysfunction on a 44-year-old man who could not get an erection for sexual intercourse purposes.

The procedure involves implanting a prosthesis device in the penis.

According to Dr Ahmed Yousef, a Consultant Urologist and the lead surgeon for the procedure, a penile doppler ultrasound showed that he had severe venous leakage causing the dysfunction.

He noted following the ultrasound, an implant was the ideal treatment for the patient.

“After counselling him and informing him about the penile implant, he accepted and we carried it out. It is a very short procedure which takes around one hour

“Through this procedure, his erectile dysfunction condition has been treated. If he had issues with premature ejaculation, it will also be treated by this procedure,” Dr Yousef said.

Before the procedure, the patient had tried other treatment modalities but it bore no fruit.
