At least seven pupils have been confirmed dead after a classroom collapsed on pupils at Precious Talent School on Ngong Road in Nairobi County.
Dozens others injured in the Monday morning tragedy were rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital for emergency care.
Dagoretti OCPD George Seda confirmed at least 7 pupils had been confirmed dead in the Monday morning incident.
“ As at now seven pupils have been confirmed dead,” said Seda.
He said investigation was underway to unravel the events that culminated to caving in of the classroom.
The school owner Moses Wainaina blamed the accident on Nairobi City County.
According to Wainaina, the Governor Mike Sonko’s administration recently dug a sewer line behind the classrooms, which he suspects served to weaken the building’s foundation.
“They had good intentions to help this school but an accident has happened,” he said.
Gotta.news has learnt pupils in Standard Six, Seven and Eight on the ground floor were the most affected as they got trapped in the rubble.
“The classes that collapsed were housing the junior primary pupils but pupils in class Six, Seven and Eight were the most affected,” said Jackson Omari.
Omari said residents and red Cross workers were forced to use sticks and other crude implements to lift the debris looking out for trapped pupils.
Addressing the press at the scene of the incident, Government Spokesman Cyrus Oguna said at least 57 pupils had been injured.
” At least 7 have been confirmed dead. 57 pupils were injured. The government is going to cater for their treatment until they recover,” said Oguna.
